Faecal occult blood tests - eliminate or improve!

There is much current interest in screening for bowel cancer.This has led to a large body of published work that certainly challenges current general practice and performance of faecal occult blood tests [FOBt]. A

questionnaire was distributed to all Scottish laboratories seeking information on aspects of laboratory, ward and clinic, and primary care FOBt. Returns from over 80% oflaboratories showed that practice was very varied across the country and many aspects of performance were inappropriate or incorrect. Evidence-based information regarding aspects worthyof improvement is provided.
