NHS Western Isles provides primary and secondary care for the Western Isles - a group of 8 main islands off the north west coast of Scotland.

The Laboratory Medicine service is based at the 212 bedded Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis . In addition, it provides laboratory services for our two satellite hospitals in Uist and Barra and also to the 15 GP practices scattered over 130 miles from Lewis in the north to Barra in the south. NHS Western Isles provides a range of medical, surgical , maternity, orthopaedic, psychiatric and paediatric services to a population of 26,500.

Our busy laboratory offers routine testing in Biochemistry , Haematology , Blood Transfusion and Microbiology. Other disciplines are forwarded to hospitals on the Scottish mainland. In addition we also supervise a small network of near patient testing sites.

Our staff numbers are small - only 6 members with 3 Admin support .We offer a daily service 9 – 5.30 in individual disciplines and a multidisciplinary “out of hours“ service in the evenings and at the weekends.
