laboratory index> GrampianGrampianClinical Biochemistry in GrampianNHS Grampian provides primary and secondary care for Grampian and Moray, an extensive geographical area with an approximate catchment population of 550,000. Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI), with a complement of 988 beds, is the principal adult acute teaching hospital of the Grampian area, providing a complete range of medical and clinical specialties. It is situated on a large open site at Foresterhill, north-west of the city centre. Also on this site are the Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital, the Aberdeen Maternity Hospital and the Institute of Medical Sciences. The Clinical Biochemistry Department is located at the Foresterhill site, in the Link Building which forms a physical link between ARI and the Polwarth Building of Aberdeen University Medical School. There is a small multidisciplinary satellite laboratory on site at Dr Grays Hospital in Elgin (almost 80 miles from Aberdeen). The Department is a CPA accredited lab with an annual workload of over 7 million tests, including general biochemistry, endocrinology, paediatric biochemistry and toxicology. In addition, the Department supervises a considerable network of near-patient testing activities, and also provides tertiary services to North & North East Scotland and the Northern Isles for a number of specialties including forensic toxicology. Specific clinical services provided by the medical staff of the Laboratory include the Parenteral Nutrition service (covering Grampian, Moray and the Northern Isles, including home Parenteral Nutrition), Lipid and Nutrition out-patient services and sessional commitments to the Diabetes and Endocrinology services.
