The Area Laboratory for NHS Borders is situated on level 3 of the Borders
General Hospital in Melrose and comprises the departments of Clinical
Chemistry, Haematology/Blood Transfusion and Microbiology. Histopathology
is performed by NHS Lothian with an on-site post mortem service undertaken
by visiting Pathologists from Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.
The Area Laboratory provides a Consultant led laboratory service for a
population of 110,000 serving all BGH wards and departments, 6 cottage
hospitals, 87 GPs in 23 practices, Mental Health and other NHS Borders
agencies. Over 1/3 million requests are received annually with approximately
60% originating from GPs.
The Clinical Chemistry Department undertakes a wide variety of analyses
as expected in a DGH and employs 1 Top Grade Biochemist, 1 BMS 3, 4 BMS2,
5 BMS1 and 3 WTE MLA staff, with a Laboratory Manager (BMS 4) in technical
charge over all the BMS staff within the Area Laboratory.
